Kagome Higurashi-Inuyasha Infuriator Extrodinaire and Priestess Reincarnation
Who is Kagome Higurashi? She's a normal school girl of fifteen years of age. She lives in Tokyo in 1997. What's so important about her? The fact that she shattered the Shikon no Tama with a magic arrow. Also the fact that the thing was in her body.
Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo. This is important because Kikyo died protecting the Shikon no Tama. (shikon jewel or the Jewel of four souls) She was burned with the jewel. Kagome comes into Inuyasha's time because Mistress Centipede, a centipede (eeeurg!) youkai, dragged her down the well in the shrine she lives in. The well, called the Bone Eater's Well, transports her back in time. Wait, hang on, I dont want to spoil the first episode for you. Sorry!
Kagome is a really nice person, she just exasperates Inuyasha quite a bit. Kagome also has a power over Inuyasha. Kaede, Kikyo's younger sister (now 50 years older) threw special prayer beads over Inuyasha like a necklace. Kagome had to yell a word to "subdue" him. She yelled the first word which came to mind, which was "oswari" or "sit," like a command to a dog. Inuyasha was "subdued" by being slammed into the ground face first and paralysed for a couple of seconds. Kagome does this quite a lot throughout the series. She even pushes him onto a bridge and "sits" him, so he slamms through the bridge and into the river below. That is classic Rumiko Takahashi humor.
Even though Kagome and Inuyasha don't get along too well at the beginning of the series, they soon get to be friends. She develops feelings for Inuyasha, even though she won't tell him about them.
Kagome, as the reincarnation of Kikyo, has some of Kikyo's skills. Kagome has miko powers and she can use a bow. Not too well, mind you. But she can use one. Kagome also looks almost exactly like Kikyo. She's a lot nicer than Kikyo though.
